The focus inside is on practical and functional design - with comfortable and hard-wearing safety seats and integral seat belts. The upholstery is plain grey and matches fabric elements on the instrument panel. The smart fortwo is a real trendsetter in terms of safety development in small cars. The fortwo boasts a number of active safety systems. The electronic stability programme (esp®) is a standard feature in every smart. When the vehicle is in danger of swerving, esp® throttles the engine torque and brakes specific individual wheels in order to stabilise the car. Hydraulic brake assist makes a decisive contribution to driving safety. It automatically initiates controlled emergency braking when you step on the brake pedal quickly( but not firmly enough).
