smart forwto mhd
The smart fortwo is a real trendsetter in terms of safety development in small cars. The fortwo boasts a number of active safety systems. The electronic stability programme (esp®) is a standard feature in every smart. When the vehicle is in danger of swerving, esp® throttles the engine torque and brakes specific individual wheels in order to stabilise the car. Hydraulic brake assist makes a decisive contribution to driving safety. It automatically initiates controlled emergency braking when you step on the brake pedal quickly( but not firmly enough). The antilock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake force distribution ensures that you are able to brake and steer simultaneously in critical situations.
Numerous passive safety systems, like the tridion safety cell and the crash management system ensure all-round protection. In the event of a head-on collision, protection is provided by two full-size front airbags, belt tensioners and belt-force limiters as well as by the safety steering column, which can retract out of harm’s way when necessary. Plenty of space has also been left between the car’s occupants and the front windscreen, which means that the smart fortwo’s large interior also serves as a safety element. In case of side-on impact, the robust door structure in steel and optional head/thorax side airbags afford the necessary protection. In the front area, deformable plastic body components offer improved pedestrian protection. These are provided with thick foam backing in certain areas, in order to minimise the risk of injury in the event of a collision.
